The Son of Man

Read Mark 2:1-12

In verse ten, Jesus refers to himself as the “Son of Man,” declaring His authority on earth to forgive sins. At first, this title may seem unusual: where does it come from, and who is the Son of Man?

Mark uses it about 14 times in his Gospel. The title is significant because the Son of Man appears in the book of Daniel. He is the one who approaches the Ancient of Days, and receives glory, a kingdom, and dominion over the world (Daniel 7:13-14). Therefore, Jesus’ announcement reveals to us that He is the incarnate Son of Man who also has the authority to forgive sins; the authority given to Him by God the Father.

The Son of Man came to earth to complete the redemptive mission given by God the Father: He suffered, was rejected, and was killed, but after three days rose again in glory (Mark 8:31). And He will return to gather the people from all nations, separating those who have trusted in Christ and those who have rejected Him (Matthew 25:31-32). So how must we respond?

We must respond by believing in the finished work of Jesus at the cross, repenting of our sins, and acknowledging His lordship as the Son of Man—the anointed Messiah.
